The Addiction Policy Forum and 100 national, state, and local organizations from across the country sent a letter to the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee in support of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025 (H.R. 2483). Sponsored by Representatives Brett Guthrie (R-KY) and Brittany Pettersen (D-CO), this bipartisan legislation would ensure continued federal support by reauthorizing critical programs to address the substance use disorder (SUD) and overdose crisis.
Originally signed into law in 2018, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act (PL 115-271) was landmark legislation that expanded services across the full continuum of care–prevention, treatment, and recovery–as well as improving access to medications for addiction treatment (MAT), expanding treatment services provided through Medicare and Medicaid, ending patient brokering, strengthening prescription drug monitoring, and enhancing law enforcement efforts. H.R. 2483 would build on these efforts and ensure there is continued support for these key federal programs through fiscal year 2030.
The Energy and Commerce Committee marked up the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025 on April 29th and advanced it out of committee with a vote of 36 to 13. The bill now goes to the House floor for consideration.
“For far too long, Americans have witnessed the unprecedented rise in drug overdoses and substance use disorders, creating an imminent need for prevention, treatment and recovery services," said Congressman Brett Guthrie (R-KY). "The SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act is a long standing priority for me and all the members of this committee, and this bill would reauthorize essential public health programs focused on prevention, treatment, and recovery for patients with substance use disorder.”
"The SUPPORT Act provides a comprehensive response to address the substance use disorders and the overdose crisis in the U.S. - from prevention, treatment, to recovery. The reauthorization bill extends critical resources for patients and families, improves access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), ends patient brokering, and helps to address the workforce shortage in the fields of addiction and mental health services," said Jessica Hulsey, President of Addiction Policy Forum. "We urge swift passage of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025 and the continuation of its living-saving programs.”
