On February 2, 2026, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the distribution of $794 million in federal block grant funding to support community-based mental health services and substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery programs nationwide.
The funding includes $319 million through SAMHSA’s Community Mental Health Services Block Grant (MHBG), which supports services for adults with serious mental illness and children with serious emotional disturbance, and $475 million through the Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant (SUBG).
In the announcement, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. expressed, “These block grant allocations put our commitment into action—meeting people where they are and strengthening behavioral health services nationwide.” He added, “This investment delivers comprehensive, community-based care to the individuals and families who need it most.”
