Types of Substance Use Disorder

Patients are diagnosed with a specific type of disorder based on the primary kind of substance that they misuse, however many patients diagnosed w/ SUD misuse more than one kind of substance--also known as a “Polysubstance Use Disorder.”

Identifying the type of substance(s) that a patient misuses helps their doctor determine the best course of treatment.

Substances have different levels of risk for developing an addiction and using multiple substances increases a person’s risk of developing a substance use disorder. For example, 70 percent of people who use heroin in a given year have a heroin use disorder -- 56 percent of people who use tobacco, 51 percent who use methamphetamine, 19 percent who use cocaine, nine percent who use alcohol, and 11 percent of those who use marijuana.
