North Dakotans can now participate in Families Strong, a program for families impacted by substance use disorder

Washington, DC — November 12, 2019 — The Mosaic Group, the Addiction Policy Forum and the State of North Dakota announced today a joint partnership to bring Families Strong, a program designed to support families impacted by substance use disorder, to the Peace Garden State.

The science tells us that when family members have appropriate education and treatment, they can play a significant role in an individual’s recognition of a substance use problem and desire to get help.

The Mosaic Group has developed a program that provides support for family members impacted by a loved one’s addiction. It helps families find social support and learn new ways of interacting with an individual who has a substance use disorder while developing a new focus on taking care of oneself. It is peer-led and managed through manualized intervention strategies and activities. Families Strong members meet to share common experiences, situations or problems related to having a substance abuser in their family.

“Studies show that research-based family approaches are some of the most effective ways to address substance use disorders,” says Jessica Hulsey Nickel, founder of Addiction Policy Forum. “This program helps families shorten the learning curve on complicated topics and access practical tools to care for themselves and loved ones in need.”

“Since early on in my administration, the First Lady and I have prioritized eliminating the stigma surrounding the disease of addiction and empowering communities to create cultures of recovery. We are honored to be announcing this initiative today at Recovery Reinvented,”, says North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. “This is a great opportunity to share valuable information with families who can feel isolated, confused and frustrated by this addiction crisis. We look forward to its implementation and the benefits this effort will bring to those in need.”

Marla Oros, President of the Mosaic Group, says, “Mosaic Group is deeply committed to supporting family members impacted by substance use and recognizes that this support is not available in many communities. We applaud the Governor and First Lady of North Dakota for recognizing this tremendous need and look forward to partnering with them and Addiction Policy Forum to bring Mosaic Group’s Families Strong support group program to families across North Dakota.”
