North Bethesda, MD, April 20, 2020 -- Today, the Addiction Policy Forum, a national nonprofit, launched a PSA (public service announcement) called A Message from Gramma aimed at individuals with a substance use disorder to bring awareness to their risk of COVID-19 complications.

Health officials warn that those struggling with an addiction – particularly opioid and methamphetamine use disorders – and those who smoke or vape nicotine or marijuana may be more vulnerable than others to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and to developing more severe symptoms. COVID-19 attacks the respiratory tract and can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia and respiratory failure.

The A Message From Gramma campaign and PSA is part of a larger effort by the Addiction Policy Forum to help patients and families struggling with addiction be aware of the risks and how to take extra precautions during the pandemic.

Last week, the Addiction Policy Forum launched a national advisory advising individuals with substance use disorder to take preventive actions during the coronavirus pandemic.

The awareness campaign and PSA were created in partnership with BrightHouse, a global creative consultancy and division of Boston Consulting Group. Based in Atlanta, BrightHouse works with organizations to define their true purpose and then align their culture, strategy, and branding around that purpose to accelerate transformation and value creation, while positively impacting society. BrightHouse’s unique methodology and frameworks have been adopted by Fortune Global 500 companies, including Stanley Black and Decker, Nestlé, Delta Air Lines, and Procter & Gamble.
