On Friday, October 6th, Flexion Therapeutics Inc. announced that the Food and Drug Administration approved the new drug, Zilretta, to treat osteoarthritic knee pain.
This medication, while currently only approved for the treatment of knee pain, is a step in the right direction of providing prescribers with non-opioid options for managing both chronic and acute pain. As drug overdose deaths are expected to approach 175 per day for the year 2016, advancements in this arena will be key in addressing the opioid epidemic.
