Melania Trump Visits West Virginia Opioid Treatment Center

This Tuesday, October 10th, First Lady Melania Trump traveled to West Virginia, a state with some of the highest rates of overdose in the US. While visiting a center which treats infants suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome, the First Lady said that she wants to “give a voice” to those affected by addiction. Stakeholders, advocates, and care providers watched the visit unfold with great interest; a comprehensive response to the opioid epidemic will entail heavyweights like the Trumps speaking out, taking action, and securing adequate funding.

Katie Rogers from The New York Times interviewed Jessica Hulsey Nickel about how visits like this one could help to combat the opioid crisis: “The more awareness and the brighter spotlight that we shine on this issue,” said Hulsey Nickel, “the more likely we are to get the resources and new strategies that we need.”
